Diverse Osh
From the very first minutes of your visit, Osh envelops you with its diversity, which is evident in everything. Osh’s unique combination of cultures, languages and religions creates a sense of belonging, even if you’re far from home. It’s a city full of harmonious contrasts. You’ll find churches neighboring mosques, teahouses alongside pizzerias, street tightrope walkers performing near a professional theatre. Osh is a crossroads of cultures.
Walking along the streets of Osh feels a bit like stepping into a time machine. From the memorials to the military campaigns of Mikhail Frunze and Alymbek Datka, to the architectural marvels of the Shaybanids and Karakhanids, the threads of Central Asian history can be seen running through the city.
Osh’s varied landmarks reflect its spirit. After a walk through the old Toktogul Park, we will visit the St. Michael the Archangel Russian Orthodox Church, where more than a hundred years ago the Orthodox community of Osh began to form. Then we will walk to the National Drama Theatre named after Sultan Ibraimov, and from there to the monument of the great ruler Alymbek Datka, near the Suleiman Mountain Museum Complex. We will next visit the Museum of Fine Arts named after Sadykov, before crossing the road to end our journey at the country’s oldest theatre, named in honor of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire.
Welcome to Osh!
Locations of the Tour
- The very first theatre in Kyrgyzstan!Osh’s theatrical history began in 1877, when local amateur theatres staged the play “Judgment of Men, Not of God” and the vaudeville production “Scandal in a Noble Family.” A drama club was opened in the military assembly of the 4th Turkestan Line Battalion.
- Museum of Fine ArtsThe Osh Regional Museum of Fine Arts named after Turgunbai Sadykov is the newest of the local museums. It was opened in 2014 at the initiative of local artists. It is nestled in the historic Artisans’ Quarter, adjoining the 16th century Rabat Abdullah Khan Mosque. The museum is housed in the building of the former Osh Regional Museum of Local History, which was opened in 1974 as an administrative building with exhibitions on the first floor.
- “Zero Milestone”: At the foot of Suleiman MountainThe square at the foot of Suleiman Mountain’s north face has not always been the open and lively place it is today. Until the 1970s, the site of the modern-day museum, fountain and plaza was a very ordinary “mahalla,” a residential block with mud-brick houses.
- National Drama TheatreThe Osh National Drama Theatre named after Sultan Ibraimov is one of the largest and most famous theatres in Kyrgyzstan. The theatre company was established in 1972, but the artists rehearsed on the stage in the neighboring city of Jalal-Abad for two years, until the Osh theatre building was completed. In 1974, the theatre was opened, and the actors moved to their new performance venue on Kurmanjan Datka Street in Osh.
- Russian Orthodox ChurchSt. Michael the Archangel Cathedral is the only remnant of Russian Orthodox architecture in Osh and was the central landmark around which the Slavic community and the so-called “new city” began to form in Osh in the late 19th century.
- Toktogul ParkOne of the oldest city parks in Osh, Toktogul Park was founded in 1878 as the city garden of the Governor-General. During the same period, a church, a post office, a treasury, soldiers’ barracks and an infirmary with a pharmacy were built on the left bank of the Ak-Buura river.
